Girl Scout Group at Bucktoe Creek Preserve

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Checking the Skies for Birds

The last Saturday of the month, starting in September, from 9am-10:30am
Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

Join local birding expert and environmental educator, Kelley Nunn, as we look and listen for the common (and uncommon!) birds of Bucktoe. We will be taking short hikes through the preserve to spot birds using different habitats. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a parent. FREE for TLC members, $15 for non-members. Join TLC Apiarist Dan Borkoski for an inside look at the busy, buzzy world of honeybees. Get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge.   Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. If you have your own gear, please bring it along! $5 TLC/Chester County Beekeepers Association members; $10 non-members. Click here to register!

Join Delaware Nature Society staff as they hike Bucktoe Creek Private Preserve in search of birds such as Vultures, Hawks, Woodpeckers, Phoebes, Bluebirds, Mockingbirds, Finches, Warblers and more! Preregistration not required. This program is FREE and open to all birders!

Using the Spotting Scope

September 1st to November 30th. Monday through Friday, 9:00AM-3:00PM

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

Come out and help spot migrating hawks as they travel over Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Learn how to identify the different species as they fly by and learn about their different migratory behaviors! This hawk watch is led by Early Bird Nature Tours. Spotting Scopes, binoculars, and refreshments are provided! This program is FREE and open to anybody interested!

By creating a yard with vegetation that offers food and cover, you can create a refuge for several wildlife species! Join botanist Janet Ebert, who will showcase the warm season grasses at Bucktoe Creek Preserve’s diverse meadows and discuss their significance to the surrounding ecosystem. Join TLC for our first ever Drop-In on Nature Playgroup! This program is designed for children 0-5 and their parents/caregivers. We provide the fun outdoor activities, you provide an adventurous attitude! Come for 30 minutes, or stay for the whole 3 hours to explore this beautiful preserve. Activities like Bird Watching, Scavenger Hunts, and Crafts will be set up for all to enjoy. FREE for TLC members; $10 per family for non-members.

Pollinators need our help.  With losses in habitat, disease, and contact with pesticides, many of our domestic bees, native bees, and butterflies are experiencing alarming losses in their populations.  Pollination accounts for sourcing one third of our food supply as well as many other important ecological services and resources.  Learn what you and your community can do to help our pollinators by planting pollinator friendly gardens with Penn State Extension Master Gardener and Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Nancy Gaspari.
