Upcoming Programs

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Wild Foraging Series: Edible Plants

Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Road, Avondale, PA)

Lee Peterson, author of the “Peterson Field Guide to Wild Edible Plants of Eastern/Central America,” will be leading the third and final forage of the year in search for wild edible plants at the Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Learn ways to gather, prepare, and most importantly, identify them! Enjoy a light dinner at the conclusion of the walk. Limited spots available. $10 TLC members; $15 non-members. REGISTRATION CLOSED.

Metamorphosis to Migration: Marvels of the Monarch

Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Road, Avondale, PA 19311).

Come out to Bucktoe Creek Preserve to learn about the fascinating life cycle and amazing migration of the beautiful Monarch Butterfly. Learn about the connection between humans and this wondrous insect, and what we can do help them thrive. Take a stroll through habitats managed to encourage wildlife diversity, and help us census the various life forms we find. Cost: $10 TLC members; $15 non-members; $5 kids. Click here to register!

Calling all TLC members — don’t miss the rare and unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at Longwood Gardens. The third & final part of this series will take us on a private tour of Longwood’s new 86-acre meadow garden experience with the natural lands management team. Learn about the natural and ecological practices to garden design while enjoying the beautiful trails, wildlife and historic sites of Longwood Gardens. $25 per participant. Living History Hike

Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Meeting location: Chandler Mill Bridge, Kennett Square, PA (address will be given to registered participants).

The 2010 installation of the commemorative plaque signifying the National Register for Historic Places for Chandler Mill Bridge.

Start at the Chandler Mill Bridge to learn of the history and current issues surrounding the bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Then hike to the Bucktoe Cemetery, an African American Burial Site of Civil War Troops, for a look at ruins from the village known as Timbuktu. Join us for this unique tour of significant historical sites within Chester County. Refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the walk. Cost: $15 non-members; $10 TLC members. Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM. Location: New Leaf Eco Center (776 Rosedale Road, Kennett Square, PA).
Join TLC apiarist, Dan Borkoski, for an inside look at the busy buzzy world of honeybees. Participants will get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge. Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. Chronicles Day

Saturday, November 8, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Cemetery (229 Bucktoe Road, Avondale, PA 19311)

Commemorate the history and those laid to rest by joining TLC, the New Garden UAME Church and Heritage Guild Works for a living history presentation of the restoration and educational happenings of the Bucktoe Cemetery. Learn about the history of the village once known as timbuktu. Light refreshments will be provided. $5 and up suggested donation. Click here to let us know you are attending!

Owl Prowl

Walk through the woodlands of Bucktoe Creek Preserve listening for owls in the night. Eastern screech, barred and great-horned owls are a few species we might hear! $5 TLC members; $10 non-members.

Black Friday Celebration

Skip the shopping this Black Friday and join TLC for an outdoor adventure hike! Bring out your friends & family that may be in town to make craft ornaments from natural items you can find along our nature hike. Help create ornaments for your home and some to decorate the TLC evergreen tree for the Winter Solstice Celebration on December 21st. Refreshments provided. $5 TLC members; $10 non-members.

Have you ever wondered why evergreen trees keep their leaveS? Or how to distinguish between pines, firs and other evergreens? Winter Solstice Celebration
