TLC’s Free Time Adventures in Nature program on a field trip to the Gnome Countryside

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Sharing Nature with Children

Sharing Nature with Children

First Sundays of May-September from 10am-11am
Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

Explore the wonders of nature by engaging your child in different activities each month to awaken their natural senses. A light refreshment will be provided. This program runs the first Sunday of every month from May through September 2015. $5 TLC members; $10 non-members. Click here to register!

Location: New Leaf Eco Center is located at 776 Rosedale Road Kennett Square, PA 19348

Join TLC Apiarist Dan Borkoski for an inside look at the busy, buzzy world of honeybees. Get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge.   Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. If you have your own gear, please bring it along! $5 TLC/Chester County Beekeepers Association members; $10 non-members. Click here to register!

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

Join Delaware Nature Society staff as they hike Bucktoe Creek Private Preserve in search of birds such as Vultures, Hawks, Woodpeckers, Phoebes, Bluebirds, Mockingbirds, Finches, Warblers and more! Preregistration not required. This program is FREE and open to all birders!

Paddling Down the Brandywine 2015

Macro invertebrate Program on the Brandywine

Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 10am – 3pm.

Meeting location: Brandywine Outfitters (2096 Strasburg Rd, East Fallowfield Township, PA 19320)

Paddle a canoe from Brandywine Outfitters with a stop at a private conserved property. We will investigate life in the water with Environmental Educator, Vail Ryan, and take some time as we enjoy a day on the river. Canoes and transportation back to Brandywine Outfitters will be provided. Please bring a lunch. $40 per participant.

Limited spots available. Registration closes on Friday, June 26th at 10:00pm.

Overnight in Nature at Bucktoe Creek Preserve

Saturday, July 25 – Sunday, July 26 from 5:00pm-10:00am.
Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA)

Camp at Bucktoe Creek Preserve where you will find a beautiful landscape, group activities and helpful Delaware Nature Society camping instructor/naturalists. Take a night hike and listen for owls in the forest. In the morning, explore the forests and meadows of the preserve as we take a walk to find wildlife. We will provide a fun snack for the camp fire and breakfast. Bring your own bag dinner. Use your own tent or borrow one from DNS. Or, stay in an Adirondack shelter. Program is in partnership with The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County. Register at DelawareNatureSociety.org.

Wild Foraging Series: Mushroom Walk

Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM. Starting location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA). Ending location: The Woodlands at Phillips (1080 Kaolin Road, Kennett Square, PA).

Walk through the meadows and woodlands with Tina Ellor and other mycologists from the Philadelphia Mycological Society in search of wild mushrooms. After the forage, drive over to The Woodlands at Phillips for a special mushroom cooking demonstration. Members $30; non-members $35

Sunset at Bucktoe Creek Preserve

Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 8:30PM – 9:30PM

Join TLC at Bucktoe Creek Preserve for refreshments and a tour of the infinite sky above us with the Chester County Astronomical Society. Observe and learn about constellations, stars, and other objects in the night sky using high-tech telescopes. Part of the CCAS’s mission says it best: “Seeing these objects and recognizing their relationship with our own existence provides a realistic sense of the universe and our place in it.” $10 TLC members; $15 non-members; $5 children under 12.

Tuesdays and Thursdays August 4, 2015 through August 20, 2015 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

Looking for an interactive outdoor nature activity for your children before school begins? Join us for six days of fun in the sun at Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Each nature walk through the preserve will involve an activity such as letterboxing, salamander searches, skipping stones and a special adventure to the Gnome Countryside on Thursday, August 13th! Please pack a lunch and drop-off promptly at 10:00 a.m. Snacks/drinks provided. Register ASAP – limited spots available.$5 TLC members; $10 non-members. Members please type ‘member’ when prompted for promotional code.
