TLC’s Free Time Adventures in Nature program on a field trip to the Gnome Countryside

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Annual Kite & Shorebird Watch

Mississippi Kite at Bucktoe Creek Preserve

Occurring daily from Sunday, May 17 – Saturday, June 6 from 3:00pm-8:00pm. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311).

The annual Bucktoe Creek Preserve “Kite & Shorebird Watch” begins on Sunday, May 17th and runs daily from 3:00pm-8:00pm through Saturday, June 6th. We expect at least a few Mississippi Kites (as many as 9 last year!), and flocks of Red knots, Whimbrel, Turnstones, Black-bellied Plovers, Nighthawks and many others. Bring a lawn chair, sunscreen, hat, a picnic dinner, a spotting scope, your camera (long lenses are encouraged) and join the fun watching the skies! Some seating, snacks and drinks are provided. Everyone is welcome!

Medicinal Plant Walk

Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 9:00am-12:00pm. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311).

Kick-off TLC’s first part of the Wild Foraging Series by identifying medicinal plants found in nature and learning about their healing properties. Join April Coburn, local herbalist and operator of Nettlejuice Herbcraft, on a hike through the meadows and woodlands at Bucktoe Creek Preserve as we identify and discuss medicinal plants. Light refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the walk and April’s own handcrafted herbal products will be available for purchase! $10 TLC members; $15 non-members.

Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 9:30am-11:30am. Location: Mt. Cuba Center (3120 Barley Mill Road, Hockessin, DE 19707)

Join The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County for an exclusive tour of one of the finest naturalistic wildflower gardens in the east. The relaxed-paced tour takes us through a showcase of diversity and beauty in woodland, pond, stream, meadow and formal garden settings. Take home helpful hints on how to enhance your own garden to attract bird ands butterflies. Group will meet at Mt. Cuba Center at 9:30am. Tour led by: Karen Travers $10 TLC members; $15 non-members

Cool Season Grass Walk

Thursday, June 18, 2015 from 9:00am-11:00am. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 109311)

By creating a yard with native vegetation that offers food and cover, you can crete a refuge for several wildlife species! Bluegrasses & fescues are just two of the grasses we’ll identify, characterize for your own interests, and understand their role in the ecosystem. $10 TLC members; $15 non-members.

Amphibian Day

Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 109311)

See the many amphibians that await you at the Bucktoe Creek Preserve! Explore many habitats that amphibians love, from streams to vernal ponds. There are always frogs and salamanders to be found basking in the summer sun! $5 TLC members; $10 non-members.

Paddling Down the Brandywine 2015

Macro invertebrate Program on the Brandywine

Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 10am – 3pm.

Meeting location: Brandywine Outfitters (2096 Strasburg Rd, East Fallowfield Township, PA 19320)

Paddle a canoe from Brandywine Outfitters with a stop at a private conserved property. We will investigate life in the water with Environmental Educator, Vail Ryan, and take some time as we enjoy a day on the river. Canoes and transportation back to Brandywine Outfitters will be provided. Please bring a lunch. $40 per participant.

Wild Foraging Series: Mushroom Walk

Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM. Starting location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA). Ending location: The Woodlands at Phillips (1080 Kaolin Road, Kennett Square, PA).

Walk through the meadows and woodlands with Tina Ellor and other mycologists from the Philadelphia Mycological Society in search of wild mushrooms. After the forage, drive over to The Woodlands at Phillips for a special mushroom cooking demonstration. Members $30; non-members $35

Looking for an interactive outdoor nature activity for your children before school begins? Join us for six days of fun in the sun at Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Each nature walk through the preserve will involve an activity such as letterboxing, salamander searches, skipping stones and a special adventure to the Gnome Countryside on Thursday, August 13th! Please pack a lunch and drop-off promptly at 10:00 a.m. Snacks/drinks provided. Explore the wonders of nature by engaging your child in different activities each month to awaken their natural senses. A light refreshment will be provided. Join TLC Apiarist Dan Borkoski for an inside look at the busy, buzzy world of honeybees.
