Upcoming Programs

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Road, Avondale, PA)

Spring beauty, Nodding Trillium, Wild Geranium — what do all of these names have in common? They are wildflowers found blooming at Bucktoe Creek Preserve! Botanist, Janet Ebert, will be leading a walk through the preserve to help you with simple and clever ways to identify all of the common wildflowers found throughout the spring season. Cost: $10 TLC members; $15 non-members. Living History Hike

Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Road, Avondale, PA).

Start at the Chandler Mill Bridge to learn of the history and current issues surrounding the bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Then hike to the Bucktoe Cemetery, an African American Burial Site of Civil War Troops. We’ll explore the ruins from the village known as Tumbuktu. Join this unique tour of significant historical sites within Chester County with Architectural Historian, Jane Dorchester. Cost: $5 TLC members; $10 non-members. Click here to register!

Sharing Nature with Children

Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Road, Avondale, PA 19311)

Explore the wonders of nature by engaging your child in different activities each month to awaken their natural senses. A light refreshment will be provided. This program runs the first weekend of every  month from May – September 2014. Other dates include; Saturdays 8/2 and 9/6 and Sundays 6/8 and 7/6. Cost: $5 TLC members; $10 non-members. Join TLC apiarist, Dan Borkoski, for an inside look at the busy buzzy world of honeybees. Participants will get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge. Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. Cool Season Grass Walk

By creating a yard with vegetation that offers food and cover, you can create a refuge for several wildlife species! Bluegrasses & fescues are just two of the grasses we’ll identify, characterize for your own interests, and understand their role in the ecosystem. Botanist, Janet Ebert will be leading the hike through class I meadows at Bucktoe Creek Preserve.

Medicinal Plant Walk

Kick-off TLC’s first part of the Wild Foraging Series by identifying medicinal plants found in nature and learning about their healing properties. April’s own handcrafted herbal products will be available for purchase!

Paddling the Brandywine

Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Meeting location: Wilderness Canoe Trips (2111 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803).

Paddle a canoe from the Brandywine Rive Museum to Thompson’s Bridge with a stop at the Point Lookout Beach. We will investigate life in the water with Environmental Educator, Vivian Williams, and take some time for creative expression as we enjoy a day on the river. Please bring a lunch. How Things Work: Longwood Gardens Part II

Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Location: Longwood Gardens (1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square, PA).

Calling all TLC members! It is sometimes said that an organization’s archives provide its memory and conscience.  As a unit within the Education Department, the Longwood Garden Library and Archives serves that purpose for the staff, students, and volunteers of this complex garden.  It is home to a rich resource of current and rare books and magazines on horticulture, botany, and the allied arts and sciences as well as the institutional records from 1954 to present.  Some of these archives (both paper and electronic documents) include building blueprints, planting designs, photographs, property maps and audio and video recordings. Overnight in NatureOvernight in Nature

Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 4:00 PM – Sunday, July 27, 2014 until 11:00 AM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA).

Try camping at the Bucktoe Creek Preserve with TLC & the Delaware Nature Society where you will find a beautiful landscape, your own private camping spot, group activities, and helpful camping instructors/naturalists. Take a night hike and listen for owls in the forest. In the morning, explore the forests and meadows of the preserve as we take a walk to find wildlife. We will provide a fun snack for the camp fire and breakfast. Bring your own bag dinner. Use your own tent or borrow ours. Or, stay in an Adirondack shelter or hut (limited quantity, please call (302) 239-2334 or email DNSINFO@delawarenaturesociety.org to reserve). Member/Non-Member: $25/$35 (per household) — Member/Non-Member: $10/$15 (individual registration). Registration is through DNS.

Wild Foraging Series: Mushroom Forage Mushroom Forage

Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM. Starting location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA). Ending location: The Woodlands at Phillips (1080 Kaolin Road, Kennett Square, PA).

Walk through the meadows and woodlands with Tina Ellor and other mycologist from the NJ Mycological Society in search of wild mushrooms. After the forage, drive over to The Woodlands at Phillips for a special mushroom cooking demonstration. Receive 10% off all mushrooms purchased during the event. Click here to register.
