Upcoming Programs

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

If you have questions or would like to register outside of our office hours (M-F from 10am – 6pm), please use email or call 484-467-9125 (cell).

Nature that Inspires: The Workshop, Community ReadWednesday, March 25, 2015 from 6:00PM – 7:30PM. Location: contact iweir@ccls.org

Discuss the many inspirations of nature that have led to great literary works. Try your hand at writing your own nature piece with the guidance of local writers. Searching for inspiration? Wildlife in Winter Series: Part III

Trails and Tales, Community Read

Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA)

Enjoy stories by the fireside at Bucktoe Creek Preserve after a brisk hike. Excerpts from this year’s Community Read: Braiding Sweetgrass will kick off our evening of nature stories, drinks and snacks. $5 members/ $10 non-members. Click here to register!

 

Spring Break in Nature

Monday, March 30th, April 1st and April 3rd from 10:00AM-2:00PM Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

On our first of three days of Spring Break in Nature we will be learning about the creatures that live in the water, day two will explore terrain trekkers and on our final day we will turn our eyes to the skies! Braiding Bluestem: Native Grass Walk and Natural Art, Community Read

Saturday, April 11, 2015 from 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM. Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA)

Come take a morning stroll at Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Learn about the variety of native grasses present, followed by a relaxing art in nature session. Historic ruins at the Bucktoe Creek Preserve

Saturday, April 11, 2015 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Location: 541 Chandler Mill Rd, Avondale, PA

Start at the Chandler Mill Bridge to learn for the history and its current preserve surrounding the bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Then hike to the Bucktoe Cemetery, an African American burial site of Civil War troops, for a look at ruins from the village known as Timbuktu. Join this unique tour of significant historical sites within Chester County. Led by Jane Dorchester, Architectural Historian. $5 TLC members; $10 non-members. Click here to register!

Rainforest Discovery, Community Read

Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 10:00AM – 11:30AM. Location: Bayard Taylor Library, 216 East State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348

Come learn about the creatures of the rainforest in Lynne Cherry’s The Great Kapok Tree! Following the reading we will create our very own rainforest where you can become the animal of your choosing. TLC will provide crafts. Click here to register!

Wild Foraging Series: Mushroom Walk

Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM. Starting location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA). Ending location: The Woodlands at Phillips (1080 Kaolin Road, Kennett Square, PA).

Walk through the meadows and woodlands with Tina Ellor and other mycologists from the Philadelphia Mycological Society in search of wild mushrooms. After the forage, drive over to The Woodlands at Phillips for a special mushroom cooking demonstration. Members $30; non-members $35

Free Time Adventures in Nature

Tuesdays and Thursdays August 4, 2015 through August 20, 2015 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

Looking for an interactive outdoor nature activity for your children before school begins? Join us for six days of fun in the sun at Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Each nature walk through the preserve will involve an activity such as letterboxing, salamander searches, skipping stones and a special adventure to the Gnome Countryside on Thursday, August 13th! Please pack a lunch and drop-off promptly at 10:00 a.m. Snacks/drinks provided.
