Current Programs

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves and one sister-preserve.

Hawk Watch

Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Ospreys, and so much more soar the skies above Bucktoe Creek Preserve’s 297 acres. Led by Early Bird Nature Tours, spotting, scopes, binoculars, guided identification activities, and refreshments are provided.

Skip shopping on Black Friday and join us for a hike at Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Bring your friends, family and out of town guests to create ornaments from the natural items we find on our hike. If you have leftover, uncarved pumpkins, bring those along and we will show you how to decorate them for the next season.

Whooo’s Ready for an Owl Prowl?

Join naturalist Tim Zador under the full moon to listen and look for Eastern Screech, Barred, and Great Horned owls that are known to roam the preserve.  Great Horned owls should be out in force as “hooting season” will be underway.  The deep “Morse code-type” hoots of Great Horned Owls that typically echo across the fields at this time of year are all about courtship and pair bonding. This is one of our most popular events, so sign-up early!

Winter Solstice Celebration

Celebrate the longest night of the year at the Stateline Woods Preserve. After a brief ceremony of the seasons with Ellyn Hutton, enjoy hot chocolate, music and refreshments by the bonfire while we decorate the evergreen tree atop Crossfield Hill.

Drop in on Nature (DION) – Fall Season

Drop in on Nature is an outdoor, all-weather program that encourages children to explore, play, and create a child-led activities in a natural environment. Our 7 acre location is privately fenced-in with hiking trails, thousands of plant and tree species, a meandering stream, bridges, sandbox, sanctuary, art/wood studio, bathroom, washer and dryer, and more.

Proven to have many benefits worldwide, this outdoor classroom space is the first of its kind in Southern Chester County, and we are thrilled to be able to offer an alternative to the traditional 4 wall classroom.

Kids Winter Carnival Retreat

ATTENTION PARENTS: Drop the kids off at TLC for our annual Kids Winter Carnival so YOU can return, recharge, and relax from the hustle and bustle of the holidays! Get your children outside to hike a gorgeous nature preserve, play games, build structures, explore different art processes, and hang out by the bonfire (with hot chocolate and s’mores)! Pack a lunch, water, comfortable hiking shoes, and an adventurous spirit! This special, two-day program is for children ages 4-12.

Once in a Blue Moon Hike

Join us at Bucktoe for a nocturnal hike that will enhance your sense of smell, touch, and hearing. This is a “once in a blue moon” chance to be able to enjoy the 2nd full moon of the month. While we can’t promise the moon will actually be blue, we don’t want you to miss the spectacle as there is only one more blue moon in 2018, and then we won’t see another until 2020!

Wildlife in Winter Series

Join wildlife biologists Gary Stolz and Tim Zador to investigate our local wildlife in winter! This special edition series, in memory of Rosalind Schwebel, will focus on how preserving land from development can positively affect all animals, wild and domestic. Join us to understand why animals need conserved open space and how populations can thrive when their basic needs are met.

Part 1: Pennsylvania’s Furry Friends

Investigate many of Pennsylvania’s native mammals. View real pelts of different animals as we discuss the species’ natural history. Take a walk around the preserve looking for evidence of their residence and learn about the fascinating ecology of our local furry inhabitants and how humans impact species’ survival.

What makes a bird a bird? Examine beaks, feathers, talons, and eggs to discover the incredible adaptations, camouflage, and bone structures of our avian friends. We will then go birding and learn about the importance of migration rest stops and how humans play a major role in the survival of migratory bird populations. Some binoculars will be available, but feel free to bring your own.

Animals are all around us even if we don’t see them! We will help you become a nature detective and use the powers of observation to see who might be lurking around by looking for animal clues to understand what animals are doing and how humans affect animal behavior.

Spring Break in Nature

We found lots of cool stream creatures, here we are taking a closer look at one of the many snails found under the rocks. We also found snail eggs while searching!
