The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Wildlife in Winter Part 1: Mammals

Saturday, January 21st from 10:00 AM—12:00 PM
Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve

From foxes and beavers to cats and dogs, all mammals benefit from open space! Discover the signs of mammals in winter and learn about human impact on mammal habitat and population survival. Join wildlife biologist Gary Stolz for this first part of the four part Special Edition 2017 Series, in memory of Rosalind Schwebel, which as a whole will focus on how preserving land from development can positively affect all animals, wild and domestic.

Cost: FREE for all TLC members / $10 for non-members

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve

(432 Sharp Rd, Avondale, PA 19311)

This program is based entirely outdoors and is held in all weather. The goal is to deepen the children’s awareness and connections with nature and help create the balance children so desperately need. Our goal is to hike and explore for roughly 45 minutes and experience an art process the second 45 minutes of the session.

  • Open to children ages 4-10 (drop-off optional)
  • Daily Hike
  • Assorted art processes
  • Daily sensory stimulation
  • 2 Qualified Teacher Naturalists

Cost: $30 for TLC members / $40 for non-members

Wildlife in Winter Part 2: Birds

Intact migratory routes are crucial for many bird species’ survival. Go birding on the preserve and learn about the importance of migration rest stops and how human activity plays a major role in the success of many native and migratory bird populations.

Join TLC staff for a look behind the scenes at our forthcoming Interpretive Nature Center and Chandler Mill Nature Preserve as we review the plans, permeable parking lot, rain gardens, and other best management practices. We will also check out the new trails and future connections to the Kennett Greenway to celebrate the Longwood Community Read selection of The Way Things Work Now by David Macaulay.

Learn about the impact that land development has on all animals and their environment. Become an advocate for preserving open space to save wildlife and learn how we can improve habitat for animals that have been affected by land development. Drop in on Nature is back for Fall and is better than ever! The new location for this program is every child’s dream. The “Annex” has 7 acres of hiking trails, thousands of plant species from around the globe, streams, bridges, a sandbox, outdoor playhouse, art studio, indoor space, and more. This new outdoor classroom space is the first of its kind in the Southern Chester County area! These classes offer outdoor exploration, assorted art processes, daily sensory stimulations and so much more for your child. Now offering a drop-off option for children ages 4-Kindergarten.

Join a local birding expert and environmental educator as we look and listen for the common (and uncommon!) birds of Bucktoe. We will be taking short hikes through the preserve to spot birds using different habitats. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a parent. FREE for TLC members, $15 for non-members. Adults accompanying children are FREE.

Open Hive Day Participants

Location: New Leaf Eco Center

Join TLC Apiarist, Dan Borkoski, for an inside look at the busy, buzzy world of honeybees. Participants will get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge. Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. If you have your own gear, please bring it along! $5 for TLC members, $10 for non-members.
