Current Programming

Girl Scout Group at Bucktoe Creek Preserve

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Listen for creatures of the night in the Bucktoe Creek Preserve’s woodland habitat. Great horned, Screech and Barred Owls are known to roam the preserve! Cost: $5 TLC members; $10 non-members.

Chronicles Day: A Living History Hike

Location: TLC Headquarters at Walnut Hill

Take a unique tour of significant historical sites within Southern Chester County. Start at the site of the former Chandler Mill before hiking the former mill race. We will hike through the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve to learn about area history while exploring home sites and ruins before visiting the Bucktoe Cemetery, final resting place of at least 8 members of the Civil War Colored Troops. Learn about the archaeology being conducted to determine the church site before exploring the lands of the free African American community known as Timbuktu. The hike will provide a sneak peek at the Chandler Mill Nature Preserve and Red Clay Creek Local Historic District! Light refreshments will be provided. Cost: $15 for TLC members, $25 for non-members.

Join a local birding expert and environmental educator as we look and listen for the common (and uncommon!) birds of Bucktoe. We will be taking short hikes through the preserve to spot birds using different habitats. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a parent. FREE for TLC members, $15 for non-members. Adults accompanying children are FREE.

Open Hive Day Participants

Join TLC Apiarist, Dan Borkoski, for an inside look at the busy, buzzy world of honeybees. Participants will get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge. Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. If you have your own gear, please bring it along! $5 for TLC members, $10 for non-members.

Come Join Delaware Nature Society’s Bird Bander, Ian Stewart, as he uses mist nets to catch and band the birds of Bucktoe. This is part of a three year study being conducted at both Bucktoe Creek Preserve and Ashland Nature Center. This is a Delaware Nature Society program.

Join Early Bird Tours and come spot these amazing acrobatic flyers, watch them dart about for insects as they wind their way southward. Bring a picnic dinner, a bottle of wine, a chair (although seating is provided), your binoculars or camera, relax and enjoy the show. This Spring, there were a record number of Nighthawks heading north. We’ll hope for more heading in the other direction! This is a free event.

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve

Bucktoe is an excellent location to view the annual fall migration of a variety of hawks.  We’ll also see and hear a variety of other migrants, including some at our “water feature.”  Last year, we had Orange-crowned Warbler and Nashville Warblers on it!  Bring a picnic and beverages, and join Larry from Early Bird Tours as he scans the sky – plenty of seating is provided. This is a free event.
