Sharing Nature

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Nature Hike with Homeschool Community to be rescheduled, please check back

Please join The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) for a group nature hike lead by Stacey Gummey ( Early Childhood Education Coordinator) and Kristi Given ( Education Assistant and Lead Teacher Naturalist) through Bucktoe Creek Preserve. We will enjoy the ever beautiful Bucktoe while learning about what programs TLC can provide our local homeschooling community. Adult must accompany Children.

Come out for a night at Bucktoe Creek Preserve and observe constellations, planets, stars and other bright, speedy, or curious looking objects in the night sky. 

CCAS’s mission says it best, “seeing these objects and recognizing their relationship with our own existence provides a realistic sense of the universe and our place in it.”

Join TLC Apiarist, Mike Langer, for an inside look at the busy, buzzy world of honeybees. Participants will get a close-up look at a hive during routine inspection while gaining practical beekeeping knowledge. Don’t miss this great opportunity for non-beekeepers, prospective beekeepers, and new beekeepers interested in seeing another apiary. Protective veils will be available. If you have your own gear, please bring it along!

Drop in on Nature is an emergent program is based all outdoor/all weather and is child led. We encourage children to explore, play and create a child led flow in a natural environment. This process has been proven to have many benefits worldwide.  Our location has 7 fenced in acres of hiking trails, thousands of plant and tree species, a meandering stream, bridges, sandbox, sanctuary, art/wood studio, bathroom, and more. This outdoor classroom space is the first of its kind in the Southern Chester County area! We are thrilled to be able to offer an alternative to the traditional 4 wall classroom.

*Now offering a drop-off option for children ages 3-Kindergarten. Must be potty trained. Please pack a lunch, water, and change of clothes.

Our emergent program offers:

  • Outdoor exploration and daily physical exercise for balance and well-being
  • Stewardship building
  • Natural connections to nature via observations of native mammals, birds, herps, insects, plants, and trees
  • Greater independence
  • Assorted art/building processes
  • Garden growing

Mixed age groups with programming held in all weather throughout the year.

Free Time Adventures, Summer 2017

Back are the days where children can reboot, have fun and laugh together. Join TLC for twenty seven days of fun! Our interactive outdoor summer program focuses on creating a common bond with the natural world, building independence, stewardship skills and overall well being.

Dates: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from June 20th through August 24th. (Excluding July 4/5/6)

Each nature walk through the preserve will involve an activity such as:

Nature Studio, Spring 2017

I believe there is a stronger connection to nature if children are given the opportunities to explore the natural world through observations, creativity, independent learning, imaginative and uninterrupted play. This program is based entirely outdoors and is held in all weather. The goal is to deepen the children’s awareness and connections with nature and help create the balance children so desperately need. As Richard Louv so eloquently said:

 Every child needs nature. Not just the ones with parents who appreciate nature. Not only those of a certain economic class or culture or set of abilities. Every child. “

Key points from the National Wildlife Federation on the importance of kids in nature

 Body

  • Outdoor play increases fitness levels and builds active, healthy bodies, an important strategy in helping the one in three American kids who are obese get fit.
  • Spending time outside raises levels of Vitamin D, helping protect children from future bone problems, heart disease, diabetes and other health issues.
  • Being out there improves distance vision and lowers the chance of nearsightedness.

Mind

  • Exposure to natural settings may be widely effective in reducing ADHD symptoms.
  • Schools with environmental education programs score higher on standardized tests in math, reading, writing and listening.
  • Exposure to environment-based education significantly increases student performance on tests of their critical thinking skills.

Spirit

  • Children’s stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces.
  • Play protects children’s emotional development whereas loss of free time and a hurried lifestyle can contribute to anxiety and depression.
  • Nature makes you nicer, enhancing social interactions, value for community and close relationships.
