Sharing Nature

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) holds educational programs year-round at our four nature preserves, and one sister-preserve.

All programs run rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, TLC will announce updates via Facebook, Twitter, and our website. All programs are non-refundable.

Edible Plant Walk

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve (432 Sharp Rd., Avondale PA. 19311)

Time: 3:00p.m.-6:00p.m.

Cost: $10 TLC members; $15 non-members

Lee Peterson, author of “Peterson Field Guide to Wild Edible Plants of Eastern/Central America,” will be leading participants in search of wild edible plants. Learn to gather, prepare, and identify them! Enjoy a light tasting at the conclusion of the walk.

Drop in on Nature Fall Session, DION fall 

Date: On Tuesdays and Thursdays, begins Thursday, September 7th- Thursday, December 21st (Excluding Thursday, November 23rd)

Location:  501 Chandler Mill Rd, Kennett Square, PA 19348

Time: 9:30AM-12:00PM

Drop in on Nature is an emergent program based all outdoor/all weather and is child led. We encourage children to explore, play and create a child led flow in a natural environment. This process has been proven to have many benefits worldwide. Our location has 7 privately fenced in acres of hiking trails, thousands of plant and tree species, a meandering stream, bridges, sandbox, sanctuary, art/wood studio, bathroom, and more. This outdoor classroom space is the first of its kind in the Southern Chester County area! We are thrilled to be able to offer an alternative to the traditional 4 wall classroom.

*Children ages 4-Kindergarten have the option to be dropped off, 6 children per session.

Join Naturalist Tim Zador to listen for creatures of the night in the Bucktoe Creek Preserve’s woodland habitat. Great horned, Eastern Screech, and Barred Owls are known to roam the preserve!

Join TLC, and biologist Gary Stolz,  on “National Reptile Awareness Day” and spend some time with live herps! Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the interesting world of mysterious reptiles and amphibians. Flip logs and explore wetland habitats looking for salamanders, frogs, snakes, and turtles!

Living History Hike

Date: Sunday, October 22, 2017

Location: Bucktoe Creek Preserve, 432 Sharp. Rd., Avondale, PA. 19311

Time: 2:00p.m.-4:00p.m.

Cost: $15 members; $25 non-members

Led by Jane Dorchester, Architectural Historian

Start at the Chandler Mill Bridge to learn of the history and current issues surrounding the bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Then hike to the Bucktoe Cemetery, an African American Burial Site of Civil War Troops, for a look at ruins from the village known as Timbuktu. Join this unique tour of significant historical sites within Chester County.
